THE GARDENS

Great Close Field is one and a half acres – just a field of ‘grass’ until April 2006 when we started working on it. Access is via the bridleway leading south from the Cambridge Road just outside the village. There are ‘self-guided’ tour notes in a plastic box at the entrance. There is a portaloo. Cars can be parked in the village centre car park. Disabled people: please ring 01767 314599 to arrange to drive right to Great Close Field.

Each corner of the Garden is planted with fruit trees – apple, pear, cherry, plum, greengage, mulberry. We have soft fruit too – raspberries, blackberries, currants, rhubarb. We are developing a compost corner showing many ways of dealing with organic waste. The beds around the circular lawn will have flowers and herbs. There is a willow nursery: we harvest the willow for making living willow sculptures and wigwams. Various types of hedging are being planted. There are benches and picnic tables.
